Breeding

The ideal alpaca... dense, fine, lustrous, crimpy or well-locked fiber, correct conformation, a good temperament, sound genetics and the best traits for breeding success - these things are a given. Every good alpaca farm or ranch should be targeting their breeding programs toward these alpaca ideals. So Paso Ligero doesn't differ as far as the ideals we target in the herdsires we offer to our clients. In fact, the focus on breeding for the best traits is why we don’t have a large number of herdsires to offer yet. We don't believe that every male born to the farm should automatically be offered at stud. Thus the herdsires we do have are those we feel meet those alpaca ideals and can be a benefit to our own and our clients' breeding programs.

Where we intend to ensure we distinguish ourselves is in service - caring, timely, detailed attention to you and your animals. Having started small, we understand what it is like to leave your valued female and often her young new cria at side in the hands of someone else for any amount of time, let alone as many as 60 days or more for a breeding and confirmed, secure pregnancy. Leaving even one female and a cria can mean that the herdsire's farm has responsibility for a large percent of your whole herd if you are just starting out or just have a small herd. To us, that responsibility weighs heavily and we take it very seriously. We make these pledges to you to give you the comfort you need when you choose to use a Paso Ligero stud in your breeding program:

1. We will care for your animals with the same loving care and attention we give our own.
2. We will communicate with you at least once a week while your female (and cria) are here for breeding even if just to tell you that all is well.
3. We will keep detailed and accurate records of the breeding and your female’s and cria’s health while here.
4. We will work with you if your female or her cria need any special attention and let you know up front any charges that might mean above and beyond the contract breeding fees.
5. We will work with you if you choose to try a shorter-term breeding scenario like a "drive-by" or leaving your female for a shorter time.

Our goal is really the same as yours – to add a successful pregnancy to your breeding program, matching your female to our herdsire who will enhance her traits and be able to celebrate with you the addition of a new cria after that long gestation wait.
