About Us

Paso Ligero is the culmination of several ideas, years of hard work and the desire of two people to support each other in achieving their lifelong dreams. Kim and Tom Pongpat, married 22 years, have the belief that the healthiest of marriages grows from the work that two people do as partners in life to support each other in being the best each person can be individually. And much of the road to becoming that individual involves satisfaction and fulfillment in a person’s chosen life's work. Paso Ligero is that choice for Kim, and so she tells the farm's story to you...

OUR JOURNEY

Our Journey

I have always had a deep love of animals and the natural world. My fondest memories of childhood are of the hours and hours I would spend outdoors and the joy I received from each of my pets - and believe me, I was never without one... or two or three. Dogs have always been a part of my life. And there were the ever-present gerbils, hermit crabs, rabbits, cats, etc. I didn’t grow up on a farm, but my parents often thought I was attempting to turn our home into one. I loved riding and being around horses, though I never had the privilege of owning one, and whenever I had the opportunity to meet a cow or goat or other farm animal up close, I'd take it.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

So what is this "treading lightly" philosophy all about? Well, it is important enough to me that I named the farm after it - Paso Ligero means tread lightly in Spanish - a nod to the Latin American roots of the alpaca. The alpaca in many ways represents the idea well, almost literally. With their soft-padded feet, they do very little harm to the pastures on which they graze, and graze rather lightly in comparison to many of the more traditional or conventional livestock.
